Counseling Designed to Support Couples on the Brink
Discernment Counseling is a short-term process for couples who are questioning whether to remain in a marriage and work to improve it or leave it. Oftentimes, couples considering separation and/or divorce struggle to know whether or not they are ready, willing and/or able to do so.
Some couples enter counseling together before they have confirmed that both partners are motivated to work to strengthen and repair the relationship. And other couples move towards separation and divorce without attempting any repair of the relationship. This short-term specialized counseling process is designed to assist them in gaining clarity in making decisions about their relationship and also provides a roadmap for next steps so they can move forward in healthier, more constructive ways.
The goal of Discernment Counseling is to assist couples in deciding on and committing to a path forward. Creating a shared understanding and a distinct plan alleviates stress and tension.
As a Discernment Counselor, I work with the couple for up to five sessions that include a combination of joint and individual meetings to assist them in developing the necessary clarity in order to effectively move forward, either to commit to some intensive couples counseling or to move respectfully towards separation.
